Bush Poetry

 

This event is sponsored and hosted by the Trentham Historical Society

Our bush poetry session is a well established part of  Words in Winter Trentham, and is a great opportunity to write original poetry and to perform at the ever popular Bush Poetry readings & performance event.  This year the competitions will run according to the Australian Bush Poetry Association guidelines - you can find details about judging assessment guidelines and expectations  for both written and on-the-day performance poetry here :  http://www.abpa.org.au/competitions.html

Bush Poetry Readings & Performances

 

When: Saturday 19 August 2017

​

Where: Trentham Neighbourhood Centre

When: 2.30pm-4.30pm

Cost: Gold coin at the door

           Contest entrants free

   Includes afternoon tea

How to enter

This event has two parts;

  • Section one: Original Poetry is a competition for the best original unpublished poem addressing the theme of 'origins'.

Selected poets will be invited to read their work at the event. Shy poets can elect to have their work read by a reader.

The winning Original Poetry entrant will be awarded the Bruce McKenzie Award and a cash prize of $200.00

  • Section two: Performance

Poets will be judged on their performance and the relevance of the work performed to the theme of 'origins'. Poets can use an original work of their own, or a poem 'borrowed' from another poet. There will be a maximum of 15 places for performances, and these will be allocated on a first come, first served basis. Should it happen that all 15 spaces are not taken up, you can make an on-the-day entry. However, that is unlikely. 

The winning Performance Poet will also receive a prize of $200.00

 

 

Poets can enter either or both sections.

  • Poems for each section can be submitted as follows:

    • Preferred method: written work can be submitted online here 

    • For those unable to submit online, a typed hard-copy of your poem (Times New Roman font or similar), accompanied by a hard-copy entry form available from Trentham Neighbourhood Centre, Trentham Library, or Dr B's Bookshop, dropped into the Post Office or posted to:

Conditions of Entry​​

  • Entries for Section 1, Original Poetry,  must address the theme of 'origins', and must be the author's original work, and must not have been previously published or won any award.

  • Entries are to be in written form - sound files will not be accepted. 

  • Entries for both sections close 9.00am Monday July 17th 2017

  • Only one poem per poet can be presented in each section.

  • Time limit for performance: strictly 7 minutes (plus 30 second introductory  pre-amble).

  • Poems will not be returned to the author.

  • The judge's decision will be final and no correspondence or discussion will be entered into.

  • Cost of entry: No cost to entrants with a local (3458) postcode, for all others - $10.00 for entry in one section, or $15 for entry in both sections.

  • How to pay:

Our judge this year is Rhonda Tallnash,  poet and author of seven children books. She is the current Australian, Victorian and New South Wales Female Performance Champion(s).

 

Rhonda is an accredited Bush poetry performance judge with the Australian Bush Poets Association (ABPA) and will judge according to ABPA standards. (see http://www.abpa.org.au/competitions.html).
