SHORT STORY COMPETITION & READING
Submit your short story (maximum of 500 words) to Trentham Neighbourhood Centre by 8 August, then come along for Short Stories Readings at the Cosmopolitan Hotel Cellar and Wine Room on Sunday 14 August from 4:00pm. $150 will be awarded as first prize.
This year's theme for the stories is: 'It's cold.'

50 Word Story Competition

Can you write a wise, witty and wondrous story using exactly 50 words? Why not write your story while enjoying a coffee?
The winner will receive a RedBeard voucher.
Entry forms are available at RedBeard and by emailing Trentham Neighbourhood Centre at info@trenthamnc.org.au. They can be submitted via the same email address or by submitting a hard copy to RedBeard.

SIX WORD STORY
In popular folklore, the 'six word story' writing challenge came into existence when Ernest Hemingway met a group of fellow writers for lunch in New York in the 1920s. He made a $10 bet with them that he could compose a story with just six words. The challenge was accepted and on a serviette he wrote these famous words: "For sale. Baby shoes. Never worn." He collected his winnings without argument.
The Trentham Trumpet is offering a $100 prize for the best six words story. Entry details are in the July edition of the Trumpet and the winner will be announed in the September edition.

MODERN POETRY COMPETITION & READINGS

Bang, Trickle, Whoosh!

Henk Bak offers an intriguing discussion of “Language of Sounds” by Ernst Molt. Henk will briefly explain the concept of how language and meaning interact across many languages. We will then open for discussion with coffee and cake.

Rosalie Ham

Join Rosalie Ham for dinner and discussions about her book-turned-movie, The Dressmaker, as well as her other novels. Please call At Erics Café Bar (0491 375 984) to make a booking (maximum of 32 people). Part of the proceeds from dinner will be a fundraiser for the Words in Winter festival.
Dinner is a two course meal for $55. Set menu:
Entree: curry pumpkin soup (GFO, V), OR mushroom arancini with tomato relish and a side salad.
Main: braised lamb shanks, with potato mash and steamed greens (GF) OR grilled barramundi with chips, salad and lemon butter sauce.
Vegetarian and vegan options available on request.
Words to Sing

Part 1 - Fay Magee (2pm)
This event celebrates some of the great hymn-writers of the Christian faith, words sung for centuries, as well as those more contemporary. Singing songs in community is an enjoyable expression of a common faith, This event will provide you with an opportunity to have a jolly good sing of favourites both old and new. There will be an eclectic range of songs from various Christian traditions. If you would like to make some suggestions, please send to faymagee@gmail.com, and then come along and sing! Fay Magee is a local musician.
Part 2 - Maria Forde (3:30pm)
Maria Forde is a singer song writer, educator, spiritual director, chaplain and presenter working in the spirituality and education space. With 9 albums to her credit, Maria expresses her love of God through song and encourages young people to find their own expression and voice through various genres of music including liturgical music. During her session, Maria will perform and share her inspiration around songwriting - paying close attention to her songs of praise and the use of scripture in her songwriting.

Local Authors' Expo

Celebrate Trentham and district's published authors at this exposition. With publications available for purchase, this will be an opportunity to talk with authors about their writing and publishing experiences and to support local talent.

School Competition & Writing Workshop
Trentham District Primary School
The Ellen Kemp Junior Writing Competition is held in conjunction with Words in Winter. All students enter their work which is judged independently and critiqued. Prizes are awarded to three students in each group. Entries are to be submitted by 12 August, with prizes to be awarded on 19 August.
