Start your Saturday with Anne in a lively session of poetry and storytelling exploring the ideas behind the way we choose to do death. Hear what led Anne to two enduring passions in her life: writing and funeral care, and why she believes words matter so much, especially at the end of life.

Anne’s work in the funeral industry has inspired many of her poems and much of her action in leading others (and baby boomers in particular), to do death differently. In this engaging presentation using poetry and story, Anne advocates for better ways of saying goodbye and much of it has to do with the power of words.
She has published two collections of poetry, in between the dancing and Maisie and The Black Cat Band. Her essays have been published in the major Australian newspapers and journals. She is a regular guest speaker at community events and reader/performer at poetry festivals.
About Anne
Anne is one of those lucky people who makes her living from doing what she loves; engaging with people, creating ceremonies and writing. She is a poet, funeral director and celebrant who has, by listening to those she cares for, come to an understanding of how much words matter when it comes to dying.

Our modern western technocratic culture requires a meticulously skeptical mind set to grow and progress and problem solve, yet it is founded on one of the most fantastical and magical stories that the world has known, ‘This Jesus Story”,
We, the inhabitants of this modern culture, are comprised of both viewpoints. The result is often radical indigestion. Storyteller, Peter Fernon, attempts to approach ‘this Jesus story’ by telling the story of a universe where both these possibilities coexist without resort to notions of the supernatural. This story is full of uncertainty, but uncertainty is music that you can dance to.
Peter Fernon is a local favourite and highly talented storyteller & singer who brings a sharp and lively interpretation to myths and stories, making them accessible to everyone. Previous storytelling events for Words in Winter include ‘The Odyssey’, ‘The Epic of Gilgamesh’, ‘Doctor’ (the story of Trentham’s famous Gweneth Wisewould) and ‘Holding Heaven and Earth Together’ (a tale of itinerant spud diggers).
