Bush Poetry

Our bush poetry session in Trentham for 'Words in Winter' is a great occasion when performers and audience all thoroughly enjoy the proceedings. This year we hope the challenge of the theme, “Silence”, will inspire you to write a piece or take one from bush poetry you know.
Bush Poetry Readings and Performances
When: Saturday 13 August 2016
Music at 1.50pm Dean Padham and Bill Payton
Performances commence 2:00pm sharp
Where: Trentham Mechanics Institute Hall
Cost: $5.00 at the door
Contest entrants free
Includes afternoon tea
The winning Poet will be awarded the Bruce McKenzie Award and a book voucher from Dr B's Bookstore.
How to enter
This event has two parts;

Section one, Original Poetry is a competition for the best original unpublished poem addressing the theme of Silence.

Selected poets will be invited to read their work at the event. Shy poets can elect to have their work read by a reader.

Section two, Performance
-
Poets will be judged on their performance and the relevance of the work performed to the theme of silence. Poets can use an original work of their own, or a poem 'borrowed' from another poet. Poets can enter either or both sections.

Only one poem per poet can be presented in each section.

Time limit for performance: strictly 4 minutes (no pre-amble please).

Poems will not be returned to the author.

The judge's decision will be final and no correspondence will be entered into.

Poems entered in Section 1 shall be the author's original work, and must not have been previously published or won any award.

Cost of entry: free to enter.
If there are a large number of entries, 15 will be selected for performance in each section.
2016 Judge: Maggie Murphy
Trentham is delighted and honoured to have Maggie Murphy as the judge for this year’s Bush Poetry. Maggie was nominated for three awards at the 2015 Tamworth Country Music Festival.
At the Henry Lawson Bush Poetry Festival held at Gol Gong, NSW, Maggie won the Leonard Teal Performance Prize. Her awards include not only performance but the Australian Bush Laureate Awards for Album and single CD Awards. These will be for sale at the Bush Poetry Competition held at the Mechanics Institute on Saturday the 13th August.
Maggie will perform one of her prize winning bush poems for us as part of this event.

Write your poem and submit it here. Fifteen poems will be selected and shortlisted and the poets invited to read at the Contemporary Poetry Reading (details below).
The Cath Pye prize of $100 will be awarded at this event, and the winning poet invited to read at The Last Word on Sunday 28th August commencing at 4.00pm.

2016 Judge
This year's judge for contemporary poetry will be Professor Kevin Brophy, author of 13 books of poetry, fiction and essays. He teaches in the Creative Writing Program in the School of Culture and Communication at the University of Melbourne. Professor Brophy is a chief investigator with a team of researchers in the ARC funded Discovery Project 'Understanding Creative Excellence: A Case Study in Poetry' (2013-2015). He is co-editor of the journal of Creative Writing theory, TEXT, and his poems, fiction and essays have been widely published. He has been a recent board member of Going Down Swinging (2009-12), four times a judge for the Victorian Premiers Literary Awards, and through Hit & Miss, the publisher of chapbooks by Melbourne poets. He has performed and read widely in Melbourne and regional Victoria.
