The Ellen Kemp Memorial Short Story Prize
Ellen Kemp was Trentham's pharmacist for many years, and an avid promoter of women in business. She was an active, well known and beloved member of the community until her death in 2011. Her family made a contribution to the Trentham Neighbourhood Centre, who in turn invested in the inaugural Ellen Kemp Memorial Short Story Prize, and now administer the fund. The Kemp family continues to contribute to the prize fund each year.

How To Enter

Theme and word limit: the theme of 'origins' must be explored in any way you see fit in an original, unpublished fiction or creative non-fiction short story up to 3000 words.

Closing date: 9.00am on Monday 17th July 2017. Entries are time stamped and late entries will not be forwarded to the judge.

Entry fee: there is no fee for local residents unless they wish to donate the fee towards Words in Winter. For all others the fee is $10.00, payable by direct deposit to: BSB 633000 - Acct 147 330 278 - Name of account: WIW Trentham

Winning and selected shortlisted works may be used as promotional material for the competition, the Words in Winter Trentham website, or the TNC website, or in print. Published entries may be subject to editing.

Winners will be notified and prizes will be awarded at The Last Word on Sunday 20th August at 4pm at Trentham Neighbourhood Centre.
2017 Judge
The judge for 2017 is Dr Rashida Murphy from Perth, Western Australia
Rashida Murphy has published her short fiction and poetry in various literary journals and anthologies, in Australia, India, U.K and U.S.A. The Historian's Daughter was shortlisted in the Dundee International Book Prize in 2015 and published by UWA Press in 2016. Currently she is Books Editor at Cafe Dissensus and a past editor of Westerly Magazine. Rashida has a Masters in English Literature and a PhD in Writing from Edith Cowan University. After a short-lived career as a pen seller, Rashida taught ESL and Writing for several years before undertaking her PhD. In 2016 she won the Magdalena Prize for feminist research for her thesis which includes the novel The Historian's Daughter. She lives in Perth with her husband and visiting wildlife.
